The sad news is that many have found countless hours of effort in this medium to be unsuccessful for them. Quite a few bloggers and website owners feel as though they are missing out on something special by not having a firm grasp on the social media bandwagon but have no idea what they could have done differently to make their efforts successful. Use this article as food for thought before you begin your next attempt at social media marketing.
Reddit and Digg are a good start but you need to go beyond these sites if you're looking for solid exposure plus these are among the most competitive sites for getting attention. There is just far too much competition in almost every niche to make a solid showing on these sites. It's true you won't get the tidal wave of traffic you would with these two sites but you'll have a much more realistic opportunity to see some benefits from your social media efforts with the smaller sites. With sites that have massive amounts of content vying for the same exposure the odds are good that most content will get no attention or traffic at all from these marketing efforts.
Even if it's possible for you to use all the social media sites available, it's unlikely that you will succeed with all of them because there are simply too many of them. You need to do yourself a favor and limit yourself to a few good sites instead of trying to do everything at once and spreading yourself out too thin. Plan on being on active user and be consistent in your content posting. You'll discover that as an active user you'll be able to generate a much higher response. You may be tempted to open an account on social media sites that aren't used as much, but don't do it too often. The Process is Slow: Social media marketing and networking will not deliver instant results but while the process might be slow, it's still worth it. In order to get long term results with social media marketing it's important that you are patient and consistent in your approach. You'll have a hard time leveraging the true value of social media if you are one of those people who is very impatient. Building a strong brand and interacting with other people and getting to know them are essential to generating good returns in the long run. While it's unlikely that you will see results right away, you will realize that all your hard effort has paid off for long term results.
Market Proper Content: Even if you have great quality content, not all of it will be right for social media and your results may vary. So what content does work with social media? Content that includes breaking news, is a list that people are curious about or covers something controversial and has a little humor in it.
Creating and promoting content that is interesting to other people is the only way to get great results in the long term with social media. Promoting content that no one wants to read will be a major waste of time, so you need to make sure you are creating the right type of content. The only time you can ignore this approach is when you are working on niche social media sties and are focusing on relevant topics because the audience is much more targeted.
You really have to understand the mindset of social media users if you want to learn how to connect with these people. When you know what people care about and what problems they want to solve, you can then build your content around these issues. Otherwise, you could be offering people material that isn't very relevant or appealing. So if you're already part of the social media arena, it's well and good -if not, then it's about time you got started.
