Today there are quite a few people looking to get involved with an online home based business and mlm opportunities as well, but you need to figure out if a network marketing business is for you or not. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of people that get online and jump from one opportunity to the next without really checking out programs and finding one that is a good fit for them in the first place.

One warning to some is that there are many programs out there, including network marketing programs, that are run by people that don't have the highest moral standards in the world. You must not succumb to the hype of the marketing no matter how good things look without doing your due diligence and really checking out each program that you are initially attracted to.

With that said, there are many good programs out there and many more excellent mentors and mentoring programs to get involved with, you just have to know what to look for and where to find them.

So before we get into how to find a good network marketing company, the first thing that you need to really think about is whether or not you really want to commit to put the energy and effort towards owning your own business. This applies to all businesses, not just network marketing and not just a business online. Owning your own business can be a simple process, running your own business and becoming successful with it requires a bit more. It is not impossible by any stretch of the imagination, but it does require work and some long-term (18 months) goals to see the kind of results that you are looking for.

There are a few guidelines that you may want to keep in mind when you are looking to get involved with a network marketing opportunity. These are:

1) Making sure that the executives that run the company in question have experience at building their own mlm organization.

2) Check out how long the program has been in existence. There are new programs launched weekly and while there may be some great ones out there, you want to get involved with a program that has a little bit of a track record and has gotten the "bugs out of the system" so to speak. There is no reason for you to join a company to spend your money and energy on helping them fine tune their program.

3) Products that are popular as well as priced competitively. You know how it is, you've seen network marketing companies with great products, but they are 3x as much as something comparable at Wal-Mart. You have to be selling products that people want that are equal in price or lower in price than the competition - and that includes WalMart, Cosco and the other discount outlets out there.

4) Most people that are involved in network marketing are part-time business builders. You have to make sure that the business opportunity has a compensation plan that will pay them to build their business. You want to make sure that this group (your largest group) can start making money soon.

5) Does your company, especially the person inviting you to their activity or program, have a marketing and lead generation system in place? When marketing a program, any program, online there are two things that you need or you will be dead in the water: traffic and leads. If you don't have this, it doesn't matter how good your site looks or how wonderful your products are, you won't make money. It is vital that you have a system to plug into to learn how to effectively market and promote your program.

The reasons to get involved are in a good network marketing program are numerous, but you have to use criteria available to you BEFORE you sign on the dotted line and get involved. Using the rules above as a guideline is an excellent way to answer the question, "Is a network marketing business for you?"
