When setting up a home based business you need to decide where in your home you are going to conduit your business. This area regardless how big needs to be solely for conducting business only for tax reasons. If you plan on keeping inventory you will also decide where and how big that location is going to be also.

One of the first things you will need to get is a tax permit. A tax permit is quite easy to get and your state government is the one that supplies it. It requires you fill out a form to determine name of business, type of business, location of business, and owners. A small fee is required normally under one hundred dollars. This is how you get your state tax business ID which most wholesalers require before they will sell to you wholesale.

The second thing you need to get is an EIN number. EIN stands for Employer Identification Number, it is the number required when you have employees. This comes from the federal IRS and you can get one online in minutes. Even if you do not plan on having employees you should still get one since some wholesalers and businesses will ask for this number also.

The next thing is setting up your office and how you will conduct business. Many home based businesses are conducted online so you will need a computer, internet, and some kind of business software. If you are going to have a website then you will also need hosting and a website for ecommerce. Both are very easy to setup with minimal cost. Note: Keep all receipts for business and taxes.

From this point it is just a matter of getting to work doing business and locating customers. Different businesses require different methods and types of customers, so it is up to you at this point to decide which direction to go in. You will certainly want to look at advertising and other ways to get your business name out to customers, and you will have to put in long hours to get started. Don't get discouraged if your business takes time to get off the ground. All new businesses take time to become successful.
