The network (multi-level) marketing industry has been in transition for more than a decade. As you might imagine, it is due to the influence of the Internet. A lot of "old school" multi-level marketers have resisted changing the way they do business, but there is a new breed of top network marketing professionals who have fully embraced the new technology.

Many MLM old timers are of the mindset that they can't learn how to do continue to grow their business using the Internet, and a lot of them are just quitting. Well, that is to say, they have quit working. They aren't crazy. They retain their memberships with their companies so they can continue to collect monthly residual payments, even without working any more. When you have spent years building a large organization, you are able to do that.

That is the power of network marketing. You can work for years building your downline so that if something happens later, and you can no longer work, or you simply choose not to work at it actively, you've still got money coming in, that you can count on. It is a very powerful position to be in.

To their credit, many MLM members who established their businesses in the previous century, have made the transition quite well, blending internet marketing with network marketing. Of course, newcomers to the industry, may never really appreciate how things were done, before the web was created.

Referrals and the process of duplication is the way one becomes successful in network marketing. You join a company that has a product you agree to buy a certain amount of each month. After that, your business is simply getting other people to join you and make that same agreement. Everybody your personally enroll is placed on the first level in your downline. You make money from every purchase they make.

Here is the reason that multi-level marketing is incredibly powerful. Your ability to generate income does not stop there. When your first level referrals recruit their first level (which is your second level), and when your second level recruits your third level, you continue to make money. Each company is different, but generally, you'll make money from five to ten levels deep.

This is what is referred to as duplication, and it is where financial freedom is a real possibility. You must not only refer others, but you need to teach them to refer others, as well as to teach those they refer to be able to continue the process. This needs to be repeated at each level.

In the last century, the way network marketers went about finding their first level downline members is they would have conversations, trying to get everybody they know to join their program, as well as anybody they happened to meet. They memorized actual scripts that had answers tailored made, for any number of possible reactions their "prospects" might have. They were trained to be rather zealous, and not to interpret the word no, as meaning, no.

In other words, it was their job to transform their personalities into that of a full time, door to door salesmen to all their friends and family members, work or class mates, etc. They were even expected to live by the "3 Feet Rule". If someone came within three feet of them, then they were required to engage them with that scripted conversation.

Whenever someone from the new breed of top network marketing pros, hear about how things used to be, they are always amazed. And, they are very thankful for the Internet that changed all that. The web allows them to laser target individuals who actually are eager to hear from them. In fact, due to the power of Google and other search engines, they are able to create systems that bring targeted prospects who ask them to please get in touch with them and share their information regarding their program.
