Your Home Based Business and SEO
Using your website effectively for your home based business means getting up to the top of search engines. You can do this by using SEO (search engine optimization) to your advantage. This is a smart thing to do. Leaving your hits up to chance is like buying a lottery ticket. Using SEO is like knowing the lottery numbers in advance.
Using optimization is what gets others to the top of a search engine list and it can work for you as well. You are able to utilize this process when you know how it works. Here are some ideas to get you started for using optimization wisely.
1. Keywords
Basically keywords are the words that will match what people search for. They will also describe what you are about. You want to be precise about what they are and you do not want to be misleading. If you are a plumber you most likely will not have flower as a key word. Make sure that you use words that specifically state what you are about in three words or less. You can have up to five but these will be descriptive words.
2. URL
The domain name you use should be constructed carefully. You may have your business name or you may have what you do as a URL. It will depend on what you are all about. The more specific you can be the better. If you are a piano tuner and your company name is Jerry's Tune Up, then you may want to use 'piano tuner' in your URL. Not only is this more specific you may get confused with auto mechanics if you have listed your domain under your company name.
3. Location
Where you are living and having your business established and having that listed in the URL or the title of your domain will also enhance your search engine ratio. Say the piano tuner is in Minneapolis. If you your site URL is 'thepianotuner' and your title states 'rated the best piano tuner in Minneapolis' you will come up high on the search engine list when a person searches for piano tuners in Minneapolis.
4. Quality
The look of your site will get you seen if you are at the top. But if your site is tacky or lacks content then people will quickly move away. Make sure that your pages are visually appealing and ensure that your site loads quickly. Ensure that it is not so busy that the copy is difficult to read.
5. Blog
A great way to build up the momentum to promote your site is to blog about it. It does not have to necessarily be about your site but about the subject. Write about what you are an expert at and update it at least once a week. You can then add a link to your blog. If you do not want to write your own blog hire someone to do it for you. There are many writers who will blog for you at reasonable prices.
Write out what you want to do for your web presence as it relates to your home based business. Plan it out and once you know your domain and what you want for it and make sure you get it. Then when you get your website going you can post it to the web. Do your research and be prepared to represent yourself well on the internet.
