To turn Twitter into one of the numerous business opportunities on the Internet, you need three things - 1. A free Twitter account; 2. A way to monetize your Twitter account (either your own website or affiliate links whereby you send visitors to someone else's website and you earn a percentage of sales) and; 3. A working knowledge of how to market via social networking channels.

Setting up a Twitter account and your own website or affiliate links system is relatively straightforward, but gaining the knowledge of how to market through using a media such as this requires a bit more research. The hints and tips below should help you...

- Talk to people instead of selling to them

Understand that your Twitter account is not to be used as a digital billboard. You will see some people doing this - they post tweet after tweet of links to products and services - but that does not mean that they are making any money.

Marketing through Twitter is not the same as traditional in-your-face marketing tactics; instead, it is about networking and building relationships. You need to talk to people, earn their trust, and then recommend products and services to them. Using this approach they will be much more likely to buy something from you.

- Market products or services that your followers need

It is of paramount importance that you select a product to market that you know your potential customer would actually be prepared to buy, it is a common and fatal mistake not to research this simple point.

The easiest way to research what your audience want is to ask them! Find out what product or services they want, then find the products or services to meet their needs.

- Choose quality over quantity

There are various tools available on the internet that will enable you to gain followers very quickly over a short period of time. Though as we mentioned earlier, it is important to actually get to know your customers, so having thousands of people following you that you do not know could ultimately be pointless.

If you do not really know somebody who you are following, then you are unlikely to take any notice of their tweets. This is why adding hundreds of followers will not help you market products, or maximize your business opportunities. Focus on building the relationship first.
